Born in 1933 in Hamburg, Germany, Lagerfeld showed off his knack for drawing and design from a young age. By 21, he already bagged the fancy International Wool Secretariat award for a stunning coat design. Our creative whiz Karl worked his magic for big names like Fendi, Chloe, and most notably, Chanel! He breathed new life into the brand, with his unique vision,making it the fashion giant it is now. In 1984, he even launched his very own label with a bang. Vogue couldn’t help but cheer for him as the “unparalleled interpreter of the mood of the moment” – quite the fashion legend! Sadly, Karl Lagerfeld took his last bow on February 19th 2019.

And let’s not forget his fabulous sidekick Choupette, the posh and pampered feline who was always by his side, turning heads and making headlines! This year’s Met Gala rolled out the red carpet for a star-studded line-up of co-chairs, featuring retired tennis ace Roger Federer, the Grammy-grooving Dua Lipa, enchanting actress Penélope Cruz, and the multitalented Michaela Coel – all joining forces with Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Let’s talk fashion highlights: Kardashian turned heads in a pearl-encrusted Schiaparelli masterpiece, inspired by a recent trip to Karl Lagerfeld’s Paris office, where she soaked up some fabulous “Met-spiration.” On the red carpet she told vogue “I just wanted to feel glamorous,” “I wanted pearls – what is more Karl”. 3

Controversies and Criticisms 

While Lagerfeld’s influence is undeniable, some criticize the choice to honor him at the Met Gala due to his controversial statements regarding beauty standards and the #MeToo movement.Furthermore, Lagerfeld made derogatory comments about plus-sized models on multiple occasions, adding fuel to the ongoing debate about inclusivity in the fashion industry.In a particularly insensitive moment, Lagerfeld made a harsh remark in a 2009 interview with German magazine Focus. He expressed that “no one wants to see curvy women,” in response to the news that another publication, Brigitte, planned to feature “real women” instead of models in their images. 

 Actor and body positivity advocate Jameela Jamil called the theme ‘a disappointing double standard’ in the industry, raising concerns about the celebration of Lagerfeld’s legacy. 

The theme has stirred up some controversy, leading to backlash from some individuals, including the Met Gala’s own social media team. In a form of protest, the team decided not to live-tweet this year’s event.
