Despite the support of Biden and many potential competitors, Harris must work diligently to secure key states that Biden won in 2020. One of those important states is Georgia, which now poses a significant challenge for Harris.

A recent poll conducted from July 9-18 among 1,000 Georgians indicates Trump leads Harris by a 51-46 margin. Although a small percentage of voters remain undecided or favor a third-party candidate, the numbers are troubling for Harris. However, there’s a silver lining: Harris performs better than Biden among the same voters.
Chapter 2: Harris’s Strengths
Interestingly, Harris has stronger backing than Biden among registered Democrats and black voters, two critical demographics. Harris garners 92% of Democratic support compared to Biden’s 86%, and 91% of black voters view her favorably, against Biden’s 82%. Yet, she faces significant hurdles with independents, trailing Trump by a concerning 11 points. Her overall favorability is underwater, with 42% viewing her positively and 53% unfavorably. In contrast, Biden’s favorability was 41%, with 57% unfavorable.
Harris also needs to win over independents, where she trails Trump by 11 points. This is crucial because Georgia was very close in the 2020 election. Biden won by just 11,779 votes. The state remains a toss-up, with the GOP holding the governor’s mansion and Democrats having both Senate seats.
Chapter 3: The Path Ahead
Trump has already started targeting Harris. At his first rally after Biden dropped out, he coined a new nickname for Harris, calling her “laughing Kamala” and claimed she’s “crazy.” He further criticized Biden on Truth Social, asserting, “Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve and never was!”
The Democratic Party has a significant meeting, the Democratic National Convention, from August 19 to 22 in Chicago. This is where they will officially choose Kamala Harris as their candidate. Despite some suggestions that Michelle Obama, the former First Lady, would have been a good choice, Biden has made it clear he wants Kamala Harris to run. He posted on social media that picking Kamala Harris as his vice president in 2020 was his best decision.
